What exactly is the Take Your Health to Heart Challenge for Women?
The Problem.
- Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States (more than the next six causes of death combined) and the leading cause of death of women around the world.
- In the United States, 1 in 2 women will die of heart disease, with close to 500,000 deaths each year.
- More women than men die from first heart attacks.
- 60% of women who suddenly die from a heart attack have never experienced previous symptoms! Because many symptoms of heart disease mirror other disorders, women are less likely to seek help.
- Heart disease is becoming more prevalent in girls, teens, and young women. 70% of children have signs of hardening of the arteries by the age of 12.
The Solution.
The good news is that heart disease is preventable, even those with family histories of heart disease. And women with signs of heart disease can improve their health significantly and reduce their risk of heart-related death by taking action now.
It's never too early, and it's never too late, to start taking care of your heart!
Through healthy lifestyle changes, including but not limited to, diet and exercise, it is possible to both prevent a significant number of heart-related deaths and reduce the risk factors many women experience such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and stress that lead to heart disease.
Heart disease is a disease of CHOICE, by choosing to live in an unhealthy way.
And the good news is, we can all choose to have a healthy heart!
The Opportunity.
Women are generally the "heart" of the family. Women are largely responsible for the health and lifestyle choices of their spouses, children, and other family members for whom they care. However, because they care for others, women tend to put themselves and their health last on the list.
The Take Your Health to Heart Challenge is designed to teach and inspire women to make heart-healthy lifestyle changes that will save their own lives as well as benefit the whole family. When women put themselves first and take care of their own health, the health and happiness of everyone around them also improves.
It starts with you!
With a million women participating in the Take Your Health to Heart Challenge, millions of men and children will also get heart-healthy in the process. When YOU join the Take Your Health to Heart Challenge, the whole family benefits!

The Goal.
We're aiming to prevent more than 10,000 fatal heart attacks each year -
that's 30,000 lives saved by 2010!
Saving lives, keeping families together, and improving quality of life for all.
It's that simple.
